MADE BY VETERINARIANs for healthy and clean dog ears

How Oticurant® came about is a story that began more than 30 years ago when a couple of veterinarians discussed the importance of keeping the ear canal dry and the skin at its normal pH. Their belief was by doing that the risk of ear infection would be greatly reduced.

At that time, most ear products were focusing on “killing” the microbes in the ear to avoid ear infections and to keep the ears clean. This was a good idea initially, but time would eventually reveal that it is not that simple.

Antibiotics, alcohols, disinfectants, and so forth do kill the microbes but at the same time these compounds compromise the skin and eventually destroy the natural barriers against microbes that healthy skin has. This lack of natural barrier may lead to recurring problems in the ear, such as ear infections.

That is why there are no disinfectants, antibiotics, alcohols, germicides or fungicides in Oticurant®. The effect of Oticurant® is based on 100% natural ingredients.

What other dog owners say about Oticurant

5/5

This stuff is amazing! One of our English Bulldogs has always had ear problems, I gave them one good cleaning and then used this 4 days in a row and her yeasty ears are gone!

5/5

It seems to work and is easy to put into my pet’s ears. One of my dogs had smelly ears and was scratching her head and ears. I put this in and no smell or scratching ears. Best ear medicine I have tried!

5/5

My cockapoo hates the water solution so when I found Oticurant, it was a home run! She no longer fights me and is happy to have the powder in her ears. This works a lot better than other products. So happy I found this!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  1. Shake down the powder in the packet before opening.
  2. Hold the earflap with one hand and pour the powder into the ear canal. Do not push the powder down the ear canal.
  3. Let go of the earflap. Do not massage the ear after application – it is not needed.
  4. Your dog may shake its head. This is normal.

Important: do not combine Oticurant® with fluids. That will disable the effect of Oticurant®.

A premeasured packet is the perfect dispenser for a fine hygroscopic powder when you want to make sure that your dog gets the right dose without compromising hygiene. All plastic bottles share the same predicaments: risk of cross contamination if the tip touches the skin in the ear and lack of accuracy dosing.

If there are signs like bad smell, itching and redness then you should apply Oticurant® according to the schedule below. If there are no signs of improvement after 5-7 days then you should consult a veterinarian.
Weight of dog
Dosing per ear and day

If Oticurant® has not been used previously then put one dose in each ear once a day for five days. After the initial dosing regimen is concluded, put one dose in each ear once a week as a maintenance regimen.

Oticurant® is a trademark of Adunica AB, Sweden. When Adunica acquired the original powder formulation, it contained a disinfectant. We removed the disinfectant and substituted it with natural ingredients, which clinical trials have demonstrated to be equally effective. This is an example of Adunica’s commitment to developing products for companion animals with a clear focus on quality, natural ingredients.

Oticurant® is probably the only scientifically developed ear powder with a US patent, along with patents in other countries. We are proud that our research has been able to produce an ear powder with natural ingredients that have demonstrated efficacy in several clinical trials.

There are many reasons why a dog could experience problems with its ears. It could be anything from allergies genetically narrow ear canals or just that your dog loves to swim which results in moisture in the ears. Although the causes may vary, the clinical signs of bad smell, itching and redness are more or less the same in most cases.

Different microbes such as fungi and bacteria are present in the ear canal. This is normal and, in most cases, not a problem but because of an imbalance there can be overgrowth of microbes. This will lead to a bad smell from the ear along with itching and redness. In the worst cases, these clinical signs could indicate the early stages of an ear infection.

It is demonstrated in clinical trials that Oticurant® can alleviate such ailments as itching, bad smell and redness. But, of course, Oticurant® only changes the physical conditions in the ears, not the underlying problem.

As mentioned earlier, the bad smell comes when fungi and bacteria grow out of control. The by-products that the microbes produce have a characteristic smell that is normally perceived as bad. This is an important clue to the state of the ear canal and should be attended to as early as possible to avoid more serious problems in the future

It is therefore important that you often smell in your dog’s ears to get an early warning signal.

That leads us into what Oticurant® can do for your dog. On a general level, Oticurant® changes the physical conditions for fungi and bacteria affecting their growth without affecting the microorganisms themselves. Therefore, bacteria will not develop resistance to Oticurant®. So, you can keep using Oticurant® without any risk of adverse effects like bacterial resistance.

L-Fucose, this is a monosaccharide (simple sugar) with antibacterial properties. L-Fucose is found in kelp (brown seaweed).

Here’s how it works.

1) Bacteria have an affinity for certain sugar receptors on a cell where they need to attach themselves to be able to infect the cell.

2) Introducing L-Fucose, which has a similar chemistry and form as the cell sugar receptor.

3) L-Fucose will attach to the lectin on the bacteria blocking the possibility for the bacteria to attach to the cell.

Lactic acid, a natural weak acid found in many food items and cosmetics, is added to Oticurant® to balance the skin pH. Healthy skin is very important for protection against all kinds of microbes like bacteria and fungi. The protection is optimal when the skin pH is around 5. The low pH will control the growth and the proliferation of the microbes. When there is an imbalance in the ear canal for any reason, the pH will start to move up and when that happens microbes thrive with overgrowth as a result. This leads to bad smell, itching and redness and could be a sign of a beginning ear infection.

When Oticurant® powder is applied into the ear the moisture will immediately react with the lactic acid and lower the pH to the natural skin pH.

Inert Ingredients (Excipients): A mixture of inert and crystalline powders that all are 100% natural. The choice of powders in the mix are based on the absorption properties. There is no talc added to the formulation.

Once the quick onset of the lactic acid has normalized skin pH, the aim is to deprive the microbes of nutrients and moisture.

The excipient mix will bind both lipids and waxy compounds as well as moisture, this will effectively stop any overgrowth of microbes.

When the powders bind lipids and moisture small white flakes are formed. If there is a lot of hair in the ear these flakes might stick on to them but they are easily removed by hand. Often, dogs will shake out the flakes themselves. This is how the ears become cleaner over time when Oticurant® is used as directed.

If the ear canal is wet from swimming, you should wait to give Oticurant® until the ears are dry.
